Eskdale War Memorial Church, SH5, Eskdale, Hawkes Bay

Another very familiar and popular church in Hawkes Bay is the Eskdale war memorial church on State Highway 5 which was designed by James Chapman-Taylor and dedicated in 1920. It was built in memory of a local man, Percival Beattie, who was killed near the end of the First World War. Eskdale farmer Thomas Clark donated the land and his daughter Annie, who was married to Percival Beattie, donated money for the building and furnishings.

Throughout the summer the building is smothered in beautiful emerald green ivy that turns to a brilliant crimson in the autumn. The church is also a firm favourite for weddings.

This grand old dame has seen better years and no amount of research by me has located any history- anybody out there know?

St Mary's Church, Meeanee Road, Taradale, Hawkes Bay

Another very familiar church to me is St Mary's in Meeanee Road. The first part of St Mary's was built in 1863 with additions in 1874, '75 and '92 and it was finally deconsecrated in 1972. In 1981 it was taken over by the Taradale Pottery Club, of which my mother was president for many years, until recently when it has now been turned into an amazing up-market restaurant "The Church". Some beautiful features have been added to the interior and the surrounding vineyard and decks make it a great place to have lunch or a wedding.

St Thomas's Church, Meeanee, Hawkes Bay

The Anglican St Thomas's Church in Meeanee was built in 1886 for £344 and has withstood major floods and the 1931 Hawkes Bay earthquake.

Catholic Church, Clive, Hawkes Bay

The decommissioned Catholic Church, School Road, Clive, Hawkes Bay.  This church is very familiar to me although I have never stepped inside. My mother's family lived in School Road for many years.

Hereworth School Chapel, Havelock North, Hawkes Bay

The Chapel was built on the Knob (1958-1960) at Hereworth Boys School and was given to thm by the Williams family, in memory of J N Williams, an old boy, who was killed in action in 1942 while serving in the RNZAF.

St Lukes Anglican Church, Havelock North Hawkes Bay

St Lukes Church was consecrated on Sunday 20th September 1874 with various additions and alterations made throughout the years.

Church of St John at Omahu, Fernhill, Hawkes Bay

The brown granite memorial stands was erected by the New Zealand government in 1929, it acknowledges the allegiance to the Crown of Renata Tama-ki-Hikurangi Kawepo and his followers during the New Zealand Wars around 1866.

St Michael's Church, Puketapu, Hawkes Bay

Dedicated to Saint Michael and All Angels, a well maintained small timber frame country church. The church was built in 1910 and has a number of features including a range of stain glassed windows which were made in England.

All Saints Church, Taradale, Hawkes Bay

All Saints Church, Church Road, Taradale. Built in 1875.

On a personal note, I have fond memories of this church, it's located beside my old primary school in my home town. It was also the one and only church that I went to Sunday School for one time only; I went with a friend.

Tikanga Maori Anglican Church, Clevedon

All Souls Church, Clevedon

Built in 1861 and opened by Bishop Selwyn and built in the typical Selwyn style of vertical kauri weatherboards and a shingle roof.
