St Thomas's Church, Meeanee, Hawkes Bay

The Anglican St Thomas's Church in Meeanee was built in 1886 for £344 and has withstood major floods and the 1931 Hawkes Bay earthquake.

  1. In 1997 the congregation was so small that there was a move made to sell the church for removal. A group of Meeanee residents undertook to raise funds under the title of Friends of St Thomas's and maintain the church and build up the congregation again. Despite opposition from some within the parish this was successful and the Rev. Dr Richard Spence undertook to take the monthly service. Much work was done to install drains and a car park and a much needed ramp for the elderly to access the building. It is good to see that the services seem to have been increased to twice a month
